Dexter Cattle Australia (DCAI) Herd Book no. 11188
CALLISTEMON PARK STUD have been breeding Dexter Cattle since the 1990s with the aim of producing true dual purpose cattle which are hardy and people friendly.
We sell Dexter Beef as well as hand milked house cows (occasionally available) and young stock.
While milking our cattle provides milk for the household it also allows us to maintain the true dual purpose characteristics within our herd.
Our herd status in regard to Chrondrodysplasia and PHA is known; all stock presently tested free or free by inheritance.
Although our breeding program started with two, grade two heifers we now have mostly purebred stock and breed our own bulls. A combination of natural service and AI (artificial insemination) is used to maintain genetic diversity within our herd with genetics from England, Ireland, Denmark, Canada and America, as well as Australia.
Our herd consists of both polled and horned purebreds although most of our horned cattle are dehorned while still very young (less stress while suckling from mum).
I have limited experience in the basics of cheese making, having made ricotta from our house cow’s milk, with the hope that, as time allows, I am able to further my experience and learn much more. Stud and commercial Dexters and hand milked Dexters occasionally available.
